The U.S. reported on Saturday its first death from the coronavirus

One person with coronavirus residing in King County, Washington, has died, says state Health Department spokesperson Jamie Nixon.

Nixon, a public information officer with the Washington State Department of Health, said that a patient in the state has died from the infection.

A spokesperson for EvergreenHealth Medical Center, Kayse Dahl, said the person died in the facility in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland, but gave no other details.

The death comes as several cases in Washington state, California and Oregon have raised fears over the local, person-to-person transmission of the virus in people who have not recently traveled or been in contact with infected people.

State and King County health officials said “new people (have been) identified with the infection, one of whom died.” They did not say how many new cases there are.

Amy Reynolds of the Washington state health department said in a brief telephone interview: “We are dealing with an emergency evolving situation.”
