La Paz: For the ecominded traveler

Many travelers to Baja California go to Los Cabos, but the newest property from Grupo Habita, a well-known Mexican hotel firm, may persuade them to travel 100 miles north to La Paz, a less-visited provincial capital flanked by white-sand beaches.

The Baja Club Hotel is a historic mission-style mansion dating from 1910, with a 34,100-square-foot addition to accommodate guest rooms, located across the street from the seashore on the Sea of Cortez.

Based in Mexico City, Max von Werz Arquitects collaborated with Jaune Architecture, a Parisian interior design business, to transform the structure into a 32-room hotel with a rooftop bar for social occasions.

Original warm-hued terrazzo floors and exposed wood beams are contrasted by wicker and pottery furnishings purchased from Mexico.

To reduce the usage of air conditioning, the building takes advantage of natural heating and cooling mechanisms such as shade and smart cross ventilation.
