The study presented by the representative of the Morena party from the state of Sonora, Hirepan Maya, to change the name of the Sea of Cortez to the Sea of Yaqui, was turned over to commissions of the Mexican Congress.
The Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez or Bermejo Sea, is an extension of the Pacific Ocean and is located between the Baja California peninsula and the states of Sonora and Sinaloa, in northwestern Mexico. It has a length of 1,126 kilometers and its width varies between 48 and 241 kilometers.
With the commemoration of the 500 years of the indigenous resistance, it will be sought to eliminate the nomination of the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés to place the one of the main indigenous people in the region of Sonora, according to the proposal of the Morena congressman.
It should be remembered that on July 27 the Mexico City government changed the name of the Tree of the Sad Night, where Hernán Cortés supposedly cried after being defeated in a battle by the Aztecs, to the Plaza de la Noche Victoriosa (Square of the Victorious Night).
Last year, the statue of Christopher Columbus was also removed from the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, because he was considered a cruel conqueror, representative of European repression against the indigenous peoples of America.
In La Paz, journalist Cuauhtemoc Morgan opposes the change of name for the Gulf of California.
He said that very soon, he will present a book where he explains the reason why the state of Baja California Sur should be called only California, based on its history, culture and origin.
